Why You May Get a Job Refusal

Analyzing the experience of our HR department, we can say that the main reason for refusal is the candidate's inconsistency with our company values. And what exactly is included in them, and how we determine “whether this is our person”, and the true reasons why we most often refuse interviews, we will reveal in our article.

1. Being late for an interview.

Punctuality is a quality that, according to statistics, about 70% of employers pay attention to (36% of them consider the candidate's lateness to be a reason for automatic refusal). It is important both from the point of view of your discipline, sense of time and responsibility, and from the point of view of the duration of the interview itself. Usually, in conditions of an overcrowded labor market by specialists who are looking for themselves and work, the HR manager's schedule is packed with interviews. Often they closely follow each other. Therefore, if you are late for an interview, keep in mind that you are stealing your opportunities and your own time, during which you can show yourself even more deeply as a suitable specialist.

2. You don't listen to the HR manager's questions.

Or rather, you are not listening. Evade the answer. You answer a completely different question or not according to the structure that the specialist asks of you. And also a banal “well, I do not know” in response to a question that is aimed at revealing you as a person. Unwillingness to ponder, as well as to reflect - most often this serves as an automatic refusal. Since by showing a lack of communication skills at an interview, you automatically demonstrate that you will not be able to communicate within the team.

Perhaps someone will object that IT specialists are generally taciturn people and they don't really need communication. To be honest, this is a myth. Communication in IT is always there: whether it's freelance, a company or something that has nothing to do with development. Everywhere there are teams within which you need to communicate on a project, tasks, goals, etc.

3. Toxicity, rudeness and rudeness.

Yes, it happens. Sometimes candidates behave negatively at the interview, and then sincerely hope for repeated interviews and an invitation to work. If our specialists see that the candidate is inclined to something from this list, then this means an automatic refusal. Because in communication within the team or project, the candidate will definitely show himself from this side. And we really appreciate our employees and customers, their comfort. This is one of our main values.

And in general, the main goal of hiring managers is to create a cohesive team and a healthy working atmosphere. If they feel that you are not going to establish relations with other team members, they will give preference to another candidate.

Please note that we do not equate all these manifestations with the candidate's opinion, which differs from ours. We always treat the opposite, well-founded position with respect.

4. Untidy appearance.

It is not for nothing that the proverb is still alive and relevant: "they meet by their clothes, and they see them off - by their mind”" Agree that a person's appearance, his style, the way he dresses and presents himself can tell a lot about him. And also his untidiness or non-compliance with banal rules of personal hygiene can tell a lot about it. Many HR managers are those who are able to read and feel the character of a person, intuitively (and someone professionally) analyzing his image as a whole. Therefore, even in such details, they can already make up your psychological portrait.

Does this mean that before the interview, you should take your best three-piece suit out of the closet and put on your most expensive and plume perfume? Of course not. You should be comfortable at the interview so that you feel more confident. But going to an interview (yes and in general, to any new place/company) You must take into account the vowel or unspoken dress code of the organization.

5. Disrespect for the specialist's time.

Another manifestation of this, in addition to the non-punctuality of the candidate, is communication by phone with his wife/ husband / parents / friends during the interview. It may seem absurd to you, but this happens very often. The fact that the candidate decided to answer the phone and talk to his wife about shopping on the way home can put an end to employment in the company.

6. Objective reasons.

Of course, in addition to the above, there is screening for objective reasons: experience, knowledge of the language (if required), salary expectations, format, waiting for the workflow etc.

This is one of the main reasons, as well as common situations we encounter when searching for a new specialist in company.

Summing up, I want to say that an ideal interview is a conversation (formal) in which you are included; where you are relaxed and open to dialogue, while respecting yourself and the interlocutor (that is, you are not afraid to speak honestly and tolerantly about your opinion). HR managers in our company do not use stressful interview techniques. On the contrary, we always enter into the position of a candidate, realizing that, most likely, an interview for an applicant is already stressful. Therefore, do not be afraid and worry. Just be yourself while respecting others. And remember that sometimes rejection is an opportunity to prepare and try to achieve the goal with renewed vigor.
